A house steeped in history

The Quellenhof in Aachen

The Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen opened 110 years ago, in 1916, in Aachen’s spa district and remains closely linked to the city’s history to this day. The hotel was commissioned by the City of Aachen in collaboration with representatives from the spa and business communities. The design was created by Karl Stöhr, who drew inspiration from the grand European hotels. Spacious facades, stately halls, and its location directly adjacent to the thermal springs made the hotel a central hub of Aachen’s spa culture from the very beginning.

Its proximity to the springs was a defining feature. In the early years, guests came not only for social reasons but specifically for relaxation and treatment. Contemporary accounts of the opening describe a hotel that, despite the circumstances of World War I, prioritized modern amenities and international standards. This combination of spa operations and a social hub shaped the hotel’s reputation for decades. The Quellenhof quickly became a meeting place for international figures. Documented guests include Winston Churchill, Henry Kissinger, Helmut Kohl, and Angela Merkel. Bill Clinton and Emmanuel Macron also had ties to the hotel in the context of official visits and events. In addition, members of international royal families, as well as numerous figures from the worlds of culture and entertainment such as Roland Kaiser and the group The Weather Girls, have stayed there.

The significance of the Quellenhof is also evident in its role in hosting key events in Aachen. For decades, the hotel has served as a key venue for receptions, meetings, and accompanying programs for international guests during the presentation of the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen. It also maintains close ties with the Aachen carnival society “Wider den tierischen Ernst,” which brings prominent political figures to Aachen and regularly uses the hotel as a meeting place.

In addition, the Quellenhof has served on several occasions as a film set and venue for productions, underscoring its architectural and atmospheric qualities. The actor and writer Peter Ustinov referred to it as the “Adlon of the West”—a reference to the hotel’s standing within the German luxury hotel industry in comparison to the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin.

The history of the Quellenhof is thus not merely the history of a hotel. It is closely intertwined with the political, cultural, and social development of Aachen. Its role as a venue for international guests, major events, and urban life continues to make it a central part of the city’s identity to this day.

It all began in 1916

When the Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen opened in 1916, we were in the midst of World War I. Contemporary reports highlight the modern amenities, spacious common areas, and direct access to Aachen’s thermal springs, which positioned the Quellenhof as a spa and social destination from the very beginning. Despite the political situation, the opening was seen as a deliberate signal to continue establishing Aachen as an international spa and meeting place.

The turmoil of war and destruction

Toward the end of World War II, hotel operations had largely come to a standstill. The building was converted into an air force hospital, and large parts of it were destroyed during the battles for “Fortress Aachen.” Only the building’s structure survived; the contents and furnishings were confiscated or looted.

A Comeback During the Economic Miracle

After the Quellenhof resumed operations in 1949 with four rooms on a single floor, it already had 220 beds available by 1966. The focus shifted increasingly from a spa hotel to a venue for celebrations, conferences, and large-scale events. Over the next decade, the hotel underwent a complete renovation. The design and spirit of the 1970s took hold. International high society graced the Quellenhof with their presence: from the Spanish royal family’s vacation to the christening of the future Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and even the awarding of the Charlemagne Prize to Sir Winston Churchill.

Renovation and Interlude

At the turn of the century, the Cologne-based Fundus Group (now the Jagdfeld Group) purchased the Quellenhof from the city of Aachen and decided to completely renovate it once again. The 1970s ambiance disappears, and after 20 months of construction, the hotel palace regains its original character. In 2001, modern conference facilities as well as the wellness and spa area open in the former spa center. During this period, the Quellenhof is initially leased and operated by Dorint, and later by Accor.
