The Quellenhof history

1916

It all started in 1916

A new spa and bathing quarter was built in Aachen based on the town’s centuries-old tradition as a spa resort. At the centre of this new area is a palatial hotel on the Monheimsallee, the building which was completed in only two years despite the turmoil of the First World War. The Hotelpalast Aachener Quellenhof is festively opened on 8 June 1916 in the presence of a representative of the German emperor.

Growing popularity during the Weimar period

After the end of the war, the Quellenhof enjoyed growing popularity amongst guests from near and far and developed into a spa hotel of international reputation which continuously developed its service quality. In August 1936 the biggest indoor thermal swimming pool in the world at the time opened inside the Quellenhof.

The turmoil and destruction of war

At the end of the Second World War the hotel had largely ceased operations. The building was used as a military hospital for the Luftwaffe and, during the fighting for the stronghold of Aachen, large parts were destroyed. Only the main body of the building survived and the furniture and equipment were either seized or looted.

Comeback during the economic miracle

The Quellenhof resumed hotel business with four rooms on one floor in 1949. By 1966 the number of available beds had already increased to 220. The hotel’s key focus gradually moved away from being a spa hotel to a venue for celebrations, functions, congresses and big events. During the next decade the hotel underwent a major renovation with the seventies design and zeitgeist entering the building. The Quellenhof became a popular meeting place for the international jet set – from the family holiday of the Spanish royal family and the christening of the future Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands to the presentation of the Charlemagne Prize to Sir Winston Churchill.

Renovation and interlude

At the end of the century the Cologne based Fundus-Gruppe (today, DI-Gruppe) acquired the Quellenhof from the City of Aachen and decided to fully renovate it. The ambience of the seventies disappeared and the hotel palace’s original character was restored in 20 months’ building time. In 2001, the modern conference rooms as well as the wellness and spa area in the Kurmittelhaus opened. During this period the Quellenhof was first leased and operated by Dorint and later by Accor.

Today: the uniqueness has returned

The owning company DI decides to manage the Quellenhof itself and make it “Aachen’s living room” once again. Extensive renovation work and a future-oriented hospitality concept carrying the hotel’s tradition into the modern-day and marking the start of a new era: The Quellenhof is back! And perhaps even more stunning than ever before!
